(Repost for the Afternoon Crowd)
He came down from college for Yom Kippur, And he wanted to show me what he learned in school, and I wanted to do the same on my end. I am studying to be an Industrial Designer and he is studying to be a Mechanical Engineer. I drew the Wheel "because He cant Draw a circle" and he applied Engineering markers to it. It was fun.
I drew the Wheel Freehand in green highlighter. And he drew the engineering annotations in pen. Seriously, he cant draw a circle. He said this is a circle because he put 2 lines through it:
This is why Engineers and Designers cant work together.

haha, looks like what a circle would look like if I drew one. #Can'tDrawForShit

You should see the sketches that I hand to my design department, I'm surprised things get drawn.
As a side note, one of my buddies (co-worker too) has an art minor along with an engineering degree and he doodles on his notepad in meetings. His shit is awesome. I have fallen to using MS paint and powerpoint (lazy person's photoshop) if I have to get really detailed with sketching. It probably doesn't help that I've used a track pad for 4 years but I'm pretty proud of my MS paint skills.

I have a friend (coworker, also an engineer) who has an art minor. His sketches for the design department are incredible.

And this is why all my engineering drawings are done in solidworks. I can't sketch by hand at all.

As an mechanical engineer with an emphasis on design, I too struggle with his point.

To both of you:

I'm in engineering grad school and I majored in studio art in undergrad. I still draw stick figures and such. It's all about saving time, man.

Good point. All I had to do was go over to xkcd before opening my yap to realize that.

why's that? :)

As a design student, you learn to draw well quickly. That wheel took me no more than 45 seconds to draw.

An engineering student who can't draw for shit, seriously, did he fail mechanical drawing?
You for believing that those "Engineering markers," are correct. They're called annotations and he did them wrong. Also, why did you shade in the open spaces?

1) He is only in his first semester.
2) I believed they are correct because I'm not an engineer, but my dad is and I'm surprised he didnt correct them.
2) I shaded in the open spaces to show that they are not solid

Im currently a MechE student and mechanical drawing is not a class. Neither is cad, fea, cfd etc. Ive learned all that stuff on my own/through jobs and internships.

That's terrible.

I can't draw for shit. I have to use CAD for my designs.
![]() 10/04/2014 at 22:39 |

Yeah I can do that too. But, stick figures are more fun.

Agreed. In one of my classes with 60+ people I was the only one with any knowledge of cad. Its such a shame considering 85% of engineers will need to know how to do it at some point.

That wheel looks like it goes to a GMT800 GMC Denali.
